Though little public record is available of the early Harbor Acres development history, Earnest A. Smith, Sarasota’s last elected mayor is known to have played a hand in helping to develop Harbor Acres during the boom years of Sarasota’s real estate past. The land area that makes up the pair of man made peninsulas of Harbor Acres was produced from dredging the surrounding bottom of Sarasota Bay and area canals.

Many of the luxury homes in the community are located on the bay front and have panoramic views of the Ringling Bridge and Bird Key. Also in close proximity to this “West of The Trail” neighborhood is Sarasota Memorial Hospital making Harbor Acres popular with local Physicians and earning it the nickname of “Doctors Acres”. On Nov. 2, 1925, the 32-bed Sarasota Hospital opened on nearby Hawthorne Street. It cost $40,000 to build and was operated by the Sarasota County Welfare Association. The hospital is the waking reality of “the dream of many made possible by the intensive efforts of a few and the generosity of all,” wrote the Sarasota Herald (Nov. 2, 1925) to announce the opening of the first “modern” hospital in Sarasota County.

The 166 Harbor Acres home sites fill beautifully landscaped – palm lined streets that meander through a stylish and opulent old Sarasota Florida neighborhood. The architecture here is the best Florida has produced over the last 50 years. Many of the homes are either bay-front or canal-front, making Harbor Acres a boater’s paradise.
