Lido Shores Real Estate for Sale – Sarasota, Florida 34236

Lido Shores

Lido Shores features some of the finest waterfront homes in Sarasota. Many of these homes are located on the beach and have breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Homes with gulf and beach frontage are very rare in the Sarasota as many of them have been demolished to make way for high-rise condominiums. Those that do still exist are quite spectacular and the beach is deeded private to the mean high tide line.

For those of you looking for boat access, the Lido Shores waterfront homes bordering New Pass have boat docks and direct, unobstructed access to the Gulf of Mexico however this location may not be suitable for larger craft not capable of being lifted dockside. The problem you will encounter here is the unprotected direct gulf access and the swell associated with that exposure. New Pass is also the main tidal path to Sarasota bay, the currents through this natural passage can be swift and extreme. If you desire a large fishing boat of over 35 foot in length you would be better to find a bayfront property or keep your boat docked at one of the local marinas or yacht clubs. Bird Key is an excellent location if you are looking for a residence that can accommodate a large vessel.

Lido Shores Real Estate

The dates of the 148 homes built in this community range from 1947 to 2009. They range in size from 1,100 square feet to over 9,000. Interior homes begin in the $700,000’s and the gulf front properties can easily top $11 million.

The architecture in this community is quite unique compared to others like it in the Sarasota area. In the 1940’s may builders were inspired by the modernist Sarasota Scholl of Architecture designs of Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph. In the 1950’s developer Philip Hiss hired Paul Rudolph to design a group of these modernist designs creating Lido Shores. Many of these “modern” designs from the 1950’s still exist but they are slowly being demolished to make way for more “modern” designs. The modernist theme of the community is still being maintained by architects such as Jonathan Parks and Guy Peterson.

Architect Clifford Scholz’s palladium styles also grace the community. His designs are some of the most significant designs of our era and he will certainly be known as one of the great Sarasota Architects of the 21st century.

One of the most exciting areas in Sarasota borders Lido Shores. St. Armand’s Key and the circle of shops that surrounds it, is one of the most exciting places to go shopping in Sarasota. St. Armand’s was the vision of circus magnate John Ringling who purchased the property in 1917 and planned a development which included residential lots and a shopping center laid out in a circle. The collection of marble sculptures of ancient Greek Gods found throughout the circle is outstanding; many of the pieces were from John Ringling’s personal collection. St, Armand’s circle is also home to the Columbia Restaurant which opened its doors on the key in 1959. This makes Columbia the oldest restaurant in Sarasota. To last more than 51 years, you know the food has to be good. Tommy Bahama also has a restaurant on the border of St. Armand’s and Lido Key one block away from Lido Key beach and is one of my favorite places to have lunch when visiting the key.

With Prices greatly reduced from their 2005 highs, Lido Shores real estate is an attractive investment. There are only 148 home sites in the community and there is no room to build more. If you want to reside in the most stylish neighborhood in Sarasota, Lido Shores is the place to be.
